AM - 5 miles easy. I went out by myself today and this was definitely my worst run of the break. My stomach wasn't feeling great and my foot hurt a lot more than it has recently. I almost turned around early but I forced myself to go the full distance. It wasn't the best run to start the new year but that's how running is sometimes. I'm looking forward to accomplishing some great things this year.

PM - 6 miles. Back to school and back with the team again today. I felt pretty good on the run today even though we were going a little fast. We did the Sunrise/Foremaster hill loop. We started out at a nice pace but once we got up the hill, we really got moving. It was a fun, shirtless run but definitely a bit challenging. Foot hurt a lot again but I didn't really think about it much during the run so I was fine.

PM - 7.25 miles easy. Great run today on a modified hospital loop. My foot hurt quite a bit but otherwise I felt fine. We were going pretty fast again but I was able to keep up without feeling super worn out even up the big hill. I'm super excited for workouts to start next week but I'm definitely going to need to get my foot better soon.

AM - 3 miles easy. I got together with the Freshman 5 this morning and ran the Freshman 5K course. My foot didn't hurt much and I felt great but there were like 20 hills which made it a bit challenging. We did yoga after and then we just partied all day.

PM - 5.75 miles. 2 mile warm, 2x1600 at 85% (goal - 6:16) with 400 recovery, 1.5 mile cool. My times ended up being 6:14 and 6:18. The second was slower only because I wasn't paying attention to how fast I was going the first lap and I was like 20 seconds off pace and I never could make it all back up. Great workout and my foot felt awesome even though I was wearing my Pegs. I definitely need to be a little bit more focused on the workout next time.

PM - 5 miles easy. Today was trail day but since my foot hurts more when I run on unstable surfaces, I didn't go and I ran by myself. I was pretty bummed about not going but I'm willing to skip a few fun but insignificant trail runs so that my foot will get better. It ended up being a pretty good run and I don't regret not going to the trail. My foot hurt a lot at the beginning but it slowly faded out and I couldn't feel any pain. That's what I've noticed a lot with my injury is that it doesn't always hurt. Even on days that it hurts a lot, it only hurts for part of the run. Sometimes I even have days where it doesn't hurt at all or days where it hurts the whole run. It is just an up and down injury.

PM - 5.75 miles. 12 min. AT tempo (goal - 6:20). Pretty good tempo. Me, Dallin, and Skylar grouped together again and we ran pretty well. I was leading most of the time with Dallin and Skylar just behind and Alex Hill was right in with us too which was way good. The beginning was a little slow but we eventually got into our pace and we really got rolling. We were right on pace pretty much the whole time but I decided to pick it up a bit at the end just like you would in a race. Great tempo and I realized after I finished that my foot never bothered me. I think the injury may be a little mental so yeah.

PM - 5.25 miles. Kosmin Test with 2 mile warm/cool. My goal coming in was to get back up with Andrew and Preston (and all those other guys right in there) so that I can do workouts with them again. And I pretty much accomplished that. My strategy was to relax and hold back on the first two and then go all out on the last two. I pretty much accomplished that too but I was dead after the 3rd one that the last one ended up not being as fast as I wanted it. It still turned out well and I was just barely in front of Andrew with a total distance of 1451 meters. Super happy with how I did considering it is only the beginning of Winter Training. I didn't even think about my foot again and it ended up not hurting again. After today and after talking with Coach about it, I definitely think injuries are partly mental.

AM - 8 miles with 10 min. LT Tempo (goal - 5:24). I met up with a bunch of the guys today at the Soccer Park and we ran from there on the Mosquito Trail and then to the River Trail. We started our tempo just as we got off Mosquito. It was a pretty hard tempo since there was no one else there with the same pace as me and I was still pretty sore. My average pace ended up being 5:54 which was way off my goal but it felt like I pushed as hard as I could and never gave up. So I think it was a successful workout. My foot has just been feeling great lately and today was no different. I just didn't think about it and it did not bother me. I hope this means my injury is getting better.

I was right where I wanted to be on the first one but the next two were just the opposite of what I wanted to do. My times ended up being 5:41, 5:53, 6:10. I guess it was a great learning experience. AM - 3 miles. First morning run of winter training and my first morning run in forever. My foot hurt a bit but it was a great, slow run.

PM - 5 miles (trail - Mustang Pass). I decided to go to the trail to see how my foot would hold up and also because I didn't really want to run alone. It turned out to not be the greatest decision. My foot hurt a lot especially at the beginning (it kind of faded as the run progressed but it never totally went away). I guess I'll have to keep laying off the trails until my foot is totally better.

PM - 9 miles with 18 min. AT tempo (goal - 5:44). I felt like I ran okay today. It still wasn't a great workout but it was definitely an improvement from Monday. I started off nice and I was doing good but not great for the first half of the tempo. I was just behind Preston but then I really started to struggle and I started falling of Preston a little bit but I just kept trying to refocus and get back where I needed to be. I was still struggling and the gap between me and Preston grew. Luckily, Jake caught me on the nice downhill by the Boulevard and I went with him and I was able to get rolling again and we started to catch Preston. However, as we started going uphill I started to struggle again but I kept fighting back and I finished pretty well. I still have a lot to work on but I did a lot better today. I sat back for the first 400 and tryed to push the last 400. It turned out pretty good but I definitely need to work on staying more relaxed. Race - I did the St. George 5k today with Paul, Nick, and Preston for fun and to help us hit our tempo (and some of the other guys just came to do their tempo). We got in a 2 mile warm up and got to the starting line. When the race started, we all got out fast and so did 3 other older guys. Nick, Paul, and Preston were right up with those older guys for the first little bit but I wasn't far behind. That group didn't last long and at about half a mile 2 of the older guys took off and the race started to spread out. I was just behind Preston at this point as a kid about our age passed me and started running right with Preston. It stayed like that until the turn around point as Preston started pulling away from the kid and I gave a good push as well to pass and pull away from him and he never challenged us again. The rest of the race was uneventful as I stayed where I was at, just a few seconds behind Preston (I guess it ended up being 6). I finished 7th overall and so PV took the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th spots. I also finished 3rd in the 15-19 age division and got a legit plaque since Nick snuck into the top 3 overall. Super fun race  that I hope to do again but I was unable to hit my tempo of 5:24.

Race - 1.5 mile warm/cool. I had a lot of fun today. The race was awesome and I was very satisfied with my performance even if it was still off my LT pace. When the race started, I hung back a little bit but was still going pretty fast. I was just a few seconds behind Krenny, Dave, and Matt for that first mile. I picked it up the second mile and caught up to Dave but was still a few seconds behind Krenny and Matt, Dave started to fall back a bit towards the end of the second mile and I just stayed in the same spot. The third mile was pretty much the same. Matt started to gap Krenny but I was still the same distance from Krenny. With about 800 to go I finally decided to go get Krenny. I caught him with about 400 to go and then I used my kick to barely finish in front of him by 2 seconds. My average pace ended up being about 5:37 which is still 13 seconds off my LT but a lot closer than it has been. I'm not to worried about that. It was just fun to go out and race again. I am in love with road races.

My goal for this week is to just go have some fun. The trouble I have been having is that I just start worrying too much and start thinking too much and it holds me back. I'm just going to go out and run not think and have fun and not worry.

PM - 7 miles. 16x200 at mile race pace (goal - 35.5) with 1-2 min. recovery and 1.5 mile warm/cool. I love these quick workouts since speed is my biggest strength. My times were 37.08, 36.98, 36.46, 35.61, 35.88, 36.17, 35.51, 35.54, 35.06, 34.82, 33.99, 31.95, 30.98, 30.84, 32.18 and my watch messed up on one.  I was hoping for a faster time on the last one but I got trapped in but it's all good. Super fun workout and not too hard.

Warmed up about 1.5 miles with some of the guys and then got to the line. We warmed up maybe a little late but it meant that we didn't have to wait very long for the race to start.

Race - Mile 1 - 5:55. When the race started, me and Preston just took it pretty easy and ran with the DH guys for the first little bit but thought they were going a little slow so we got around them. Mile 2 - 6:08.  We picked it up a bit but still very easy for those first 2 miles since it was just all downhill. Mile 3 - 6:02. It started to level off a bit at the beginning of this mile but then we dropped into Hells Hole. Mile 4 - 6:01. This mile was a bit harder with the little rolling hills in Hells Hole. Mile 5 - 6:13. This mile was a little slower and tougher as it flattened out. We caught up to Jake at the end of this mile and he started to come with us. Mile 6 - 6:39. This mile was disatrous as I made a huge mistake. As we came to the aid station, I went to get some water and when I crossed behind Preston, I hit his legs tripping him up and making him hit his knee hard. He got up quick and said he was fine but it ended up ruining the rest of his race. This mile had a slight uphill and we slowed quite a bit but I wasn't too worried since we still had a long race ahead. Mile 7 - 6:39. This mile was pretty flat as we started coming down the Dam Road but it was about the same as last. Mile 8 - 6:17. We got rolling again on this mile and caught Krenny. Mile 9 - 6:30. Our group started to split here and me and Jake started to pull ahead of Krenny and Preston around the hill. Mile 10 - 7:03. This mile slowed significantly because of Majestic Hill. Me and Jake were still together on this mile as some sizziling fast DH guys flew past us. Mile 11 - 6:16. As we came down off Majestic, I started to gap Jake a bit as I started to pick it up a little more. I caught Dallin and Trevor (which really suprised me) on this mile. Mile 12 - 6:36. Coach cheered for us on this mile and I started to pick it up a little bit on this mile and started to pull closer to Andrew. Mile 13 - 6:13. As we hit the turn around to the finish, I saw that more of the DH guys were getting very close to me and I also wanted to go catch Andrew so I really started to pick it up. 0.1 mile - 5:53 pace. I was only a little bit behind Andrew at this point but I just couldn't get myself to kick very hard. I ended up only 1 second behind Andrew on the results but it felt like it was a lot more than that. I was very happy with my performance today and I just had a ton of fun. There were sections where I probably could have pushed a little harder but overall a great race. My foot never bothered me and the rest of the body felt really good (maybe too good). It definitely was hard but it was a lot easier than I first anticipated. I think it was mostly because I just stayed pretty relaxed and didn't really think but just run. It was such a great experience for my first half marathon and I definitely think after high school and a mission and all that stuff, I think I will get into this kind of racing.

AM - 3 miles. I didn't really run with the group towards the end because I just felt so worn out.

PM - 6 miles with 4 fartleks. Today was a lot funner. The fartleks were hard because I was just so tired and worn out but the decathlon was better. Today we did the 200 and Long Jump. I only got a 27.24 on the 200 which was kind of disappointing but I just didn't have much left in the legs after the fartleks. The Long Jump wasn't much better but it was a lot funner (if that makes sense). It just feels like you are flying when you get a good jump. I ended up getting a 16' 2".

PM - 5 miles. Kosmin Test with 2 mile warm/cool. I felt like I did okay today. I sadly did not improve which was kind of a bummer but I was okay with it. Last time I got 1451 but this time I dropped back to 1442. The truth is that I'm not really surprised with the deprovement because frankly I haven't hit any of my workouts lately. My predicted time will end up being about 4:45 or 46 which is just a couple seconds slower than last time. I just can't be a baby this time around and I need to just go hit my workouts.

Race - 7 miles. I ran the 1600, 800, and the Medley today. The 1600 was up first and I got into the fast heat which was nice. It was super windy for the whole meet so times weren't great (except for maybe the 100 meter). I got out quick and tucked in behind some guys so I didn't have to take the wind. I didn't stay with them like I should have though and so I really struggled the last 2 laps. Not sure of exact time but I think it was about 5:10. Overall, it was a decent race. Definitely off of where I would like to be but a good place to start. The 800 was next and since the meet was going really slow they crammed everybody in one heat. I felt like I got out fairly quick but so did everybody else. I stayed relaxed and got around most of them on the second lap. Not sure of time but I felt like I gave a very good push. Right after the 800, our Medley team was missing their 400 guy so I hopped in and did it. Good push but not super fast. All I did was barely hold onto the lead for the team. Some fun races today. Not my best but I haven't put in any good workouts lately so I definitely need to work on that.

I decided to hit my AT for the first 5 min, progress to my LT for the next 10 min, and finish the last 5 min. at LT. It ended up not working out as I planned. I wasn't quite able to get my AT at the beginning and I wasn't able to progress hardly at all. I almost gave up on myself until five minutes to go when I finally picked it up and hit my LT. My times ended up being 5:37, 5:34, 5:31, and 5:21. I really focused on keeping my breathing calm today so that I would be able to stay relaxed and hit my times and it really helped. A lot of guys were going pretty slow as well so I was able to use them to pull me. I think it also helped that Coach yelled at the guys that weren't where they were supposed to be and got me kick started on those last two. The last was a real confidence booster. I stuck in right behind Abel for the first lap and half before he started to gap me which really shows that I can run fast. I just need to kill fear.

AM - 10 miles with 20 min. AT to LT Progression. We headed out into the fields today and had a nice tempo. When we started I immediately grouped up with Paul, Nick, and Matt and I went withh them. They started to gap me a few minutes later and I knew I was slowing down instead of speeding up. Luckily, Dallin came up next to me pretty soon and we really got moving together. I would give a little surge and then Dallin would give a little one and we really got moving that way. At the end, Josh came up next to us and helped give us that last little push to finish off. Not much of a progression but I felt like it was still a very solid push and one of my better tempos lately. I probably could have started off slower and worked more on the progressing but I know I need to start pushing with Paul and those guys a lot more.

PM - 4 miles. 3 miles and striders. I didn't know we had striders yesterday so I did them today. It was pretty windy on my run today which made it a lot cooler and nice.

This was our first workout this season where we split between 800 guys and 1600 guys. I'm an 800 guy so we did 400s at 800 race pace so since I didn't have an 800 time we just converted our 1600 times to 800. I was supposed to hit 1:05 with the conversion which was extremely tough. I was always solid the first 200 but the second 200 I started to tighten up like I have lately and I really struggled. My times were 1:05, 1:07, 1:08, 1:08, 1:11, 1:06. The last one was a bit surprising because I finished right with Abel and Nick so I guess I really should stick right with them as much as I can so that I can hit my time. It was my PR so even though I wasn't totally satisfied with my race, at least something good came from it. Next, I did the Medley with Nick, Paul, and Andrew. I did the second 200 and I was kinda worried because I wasn't too good with the handoff but it turned out very nicely. I ran very well and Coach had me at like a high 25. We were in the slow heat and after a nice 800 from Paul, we almost won that heat. I relaxed a little too much and Colton and Sage started to gap me towards the end of lap 2. Their gap kept growing and like 5 other people passed me over the last two laps until I kicked it in and finished right in front of Dallin and Jason. First time breaking 5 which is kinda cool but I know I'm a lot better than a 4:59. I can't complain too much because your races generally reflect your workouts and a lot of my workouts have looked like my race today. The 4x400 turned out a bit better. I anchored our team to a win with about a 56-57 split.

AM - 3 miles. Just the usual but with some wind. My legs felt super fresh and so I kind of pushed the pace a bit. Plyos were good.

PM - 8 miles with fartleks (3 sets of 2 min on, 1 min off, 1 min on, 30 sec off, 30 sec on, and 2 min. off between each set). It was super windy today so Coach decided to change the workout to this. I was supposed to do 4 sets but my stomach was so jacked that I just couldn't do the last set. First time in a super long time that I actually had to stop to go the bathroom on the run and the first time in a while that I have cut a workout short. I think mentally I wasn't with it either. I just haven't believed in myself as much as I have needed to lately. That's the reason I have struggled lately.

AM - 3 miles. It was pretty cold this morning and my legs were pretty blah. Good book discussion.

PM - 5 miles. 4 miles with 4x200. It was finally a warm day again. Legs still didn't feel great but it was a nice run. I kept the 200s a lot slower today and tried to work a bit more on form. We worked on handoffs today since most of us aren't very good at it. I already felt pretty good about handoffs but it helped me fix a few mistakes. I also practiced blocks today for the 400 since it's clear that I'll pretty much a Varsity 400 guy now because none of the sprinters really want to do it. I worked on blocks forever but just could not find something I really liked. There were some okay things but nothing super impressive. I think it may be that I'm just not super comfortable with the blocks yet so I think it is going to take a lot of practice.

AM - 6 miles. 800 today and then a 10 min. AT to LT tempo progression. I felt very good today. My legs felt super good and the weather was very nice so I knew this could be a good race. I got out quick and was in a great position. I came through the first lap in about 61 or 62. I started picking it up at the beginning of the second lap but I slowed down again with 300 to go and didn't pick it back up again. I ended up getting passed by like 3 people and I didn't quite qualify for BYU which is super disappointing. I know I really should be running sub 2:10 but I just haven't run like I should have. I'm feeling fine physically but my mind isn't quite there yet. I just got to keep working on that. The progression run after was fairly strong. It was a slower than AT at the beginning but I was able to finish strong and was really close to my LT.

AM - 7 miles. 4x1600 at 87% (goal - 5:29) with 400 recovery and 1 mile warm/cool. We did our workout this morning I think to space it out a bit more from the Panther Relays tomorrow. I'm glad we did since it ended up being boiling lava hot after school. I didn't do as great as I hoped but an improvement from the last couple of weeks. My times were 5:26, 5:30, 5:32, 5:40. I guess I may have started a little fast but I knew I needed to push right with Matt and those guys to help me stay on pace (and maybe even help them stay on pace). I think I just have a lot of negative vibes towards this workout and so it really starts to drag me down. I have kind of gotten in a habit of running this workout like poop and so week after week it drags me down. I think that I am going to have to forget all the times I have done bad on this workout and just remember the good times and I think that will help me out a bit.

PM - 5.5 miles. 4 miles easy with barefoot striders and 1x300 and 1x400. Great run but it was super hot. The foot was hurting a bit so that was a little frustrating. I hate how it just keeps coming back to bother me. The 300 was a good push but not sure of my time. The 400 was just a race between a few of us for the 400 spot in the DMR A team tommorow. I totally stunk it up with probably my worst 400 this year but that's okay. The legendary Goggles was definitely the smarter choice.

PM - 6 miles. Panther Relays today and I did the DMR 800, 4x100, Sprint Medley 400, 4x800, and 4x400. Nothing amazing today. It was really just more of a workout and just a fun time. We had the 4x800 competition again this year where the loser would buy everyone else donuts. My team was me, Andrew, Dave, and Logan. So no superstars but a better balance then everyone else and we won which was kind of cool. The other events were fun too but it was so tiring. After everyone had left the meet I did a barefoot cool down with Matt and we also did our core exercises. It was just really fun to talk to Matt because he is a lot less crazy and a lot more positive when he's not with the whole group.

PM - 5.5 miles. Note that R stands for race pace and that im this is based off a 2:10 800. 600 (R+4, Goal - 1:41), 400(R+2, Goal - 1:07), 300(R, Goal - 48), 200(R-4, Goal - 28), 100(R-2, Goal - 14) with equal recovery and 1.5 mile warm/cool. Great and very quick workout today. The 800 and 1600 guys had the same workout but just different paces (800 was faster). It was really nice to have the faster pace because it meant I got to push right up there with Byron and some of those other guys. I ran very well but maybe a little fast. I just really wanted to stick as close as I could to Abel so that made most of them fast. My times were 1:42, 1:03, 45, 25, and 13. Weights after were good.

I slowed down on the 2nd lap like I always do and got passed by a bunch of people at the end but I did a lot better today. PM - 5 miles. I ran the 1600 and 400 today. The goal was to try and go with the leaders and see what I could do. It was super hot today which worried me but I dumped some water on myself before the race and that helped a little. I got out quick and right in the mix with everyone. First lap was 1:08. On the second lap I slowed down a bit but leaders weren't too far ahead. Second lap: 1:11. My third lap was total garbage. The first two laps my mind was quiet but coming into that third lap, I started to think about the heat and pain and I slowed down a lot. Third lap was 1:17. I tried to pick it up on the last lap but I just couldn't get myself to go and this Cedar kid passed me. With 100 to go I kicked it in hard, passed the Cedar kid and finished just a little bit behind Andrew. Fourth lap was 1:16. It wasn't the race I was hoping for but a PR and decent race nonetheless. I ended up 8th place overall and scored a point which was cool even if this race wasn't super competitive. I still need to work on the second half of workouts and races. PM - 4 miles. I ran the 1600 and 400 today at Region. This was a terrible race for me today. It honestly looked like I was only running a three lap race. I got out slower than I have all year but that was my plan. I just let everybody else lead that first lap and then on the second I made a move and pulled right into second behind Spencer of DH. I ran right on his shoulder until halfway through the third lap where I pushed him out of the way and made a good move (I was a real jerk today while I was racing). I didn't really look back at this point but I could tell that I had pulled a way quite a bit and that really freaked me out and I slowed down. Spencer and Sage caught back up to me again just as we started the last lap and just left me in the dust. I pretty much jogged that last lap in. My last lap was so slow that I got passed by 10 people and went from sub 4:50 pace to not even breaking 5. That was probably the worst race of my life. I ran a great first three laps and had started making a good move during that third lap but I quit on myself. I was scared of making a move that very well could have helped me win the race. Instead I finished in 11th. I've got some serious work to do over the summer if I'm going to be able to run better than this. The 400 was a little better but I finished with a 57 again. Track 2014 in Review:

I did not have a very good track season. I came in with some high expectations but just couldn't get myself even close to those expectations. It wasn't because my goals were too high and impossible. I was actually in some decent shape and I had a lot of speed and talent. After all, my last Kosmin predicted my mile time to be 4:33. The talent, the strength, and the speed was there but the hard work wasn't. I had a horrible winter training and once track rolled around it didn't get much better. I couldn't hit hardly any workouts and so it isn't hard to see why the season ended up like it did. I came in looking to State Qualify but I ended not even able to break 4:50. This track season has ultimately just been one big failure. I shouldn't be so negative about it though because you learn so much more from failure than you ever will from success. Failing isn't a bad thing as long as you learn from it and use it to improve yourself. I once heard that failure is not falling down but refusing to get back up. I can tell you right now that I am going to get back up and I'm going to use this to help me have an awesome cross season. So Track really wasn't a failure for me but a stepping stone to something greater.

Good day 1!

AM - 5 miles. 4 miles in 30 mins, .5 barefoot warm, and .5 at running club. Average pace was 7:33. Great run today. I was pretty sore from yesterday but I felt like I was already getting back in shape. Running club was pretty crazy and hectic but I enjoyed it. 1st and 2nd graders are definately hard to work with because they are so crazy but it also makes it kinda fun.

AM - 4 miles. 3.9 in 30 mins for Average Pace of 7:41. I got up and ran at 4:45ish because I was going on the trek. It was actually a really nice quiet run. Still felt a bit sore but it is getting better. I really wish I could run that early in the morning more often. Great birthday run.

AM - 2.75 miles in 30 mins. Average Pace - 10:53. I was on the trek today and I've got to say it was one of the hardest things to get up and get my run in. First off, Nick and Andrew had gone on some little rescue mission type thing the night before and so I wasn't going to be able to run with them. Luckily, their younger brothers (Alex and Jarron) still wanted to and so did Luis so that was good.  It was also so much colder than I thought it was going to be and so I almost decided to just go back to sleep. It took me about 15 min. Before I finally got out of bed and woke the other guys up. I just kept hearing Coach's words earlier in the week about "No Zeros" and I kept thinking about my goals for the season and I knew I couldn't skip the run, even on the trek. It was a good run and we decided to switch today's run with Saturday's since we didn't want to be too tired to pull the handcarts. We kept it slow for Luis but I didn't realize how slow until the end. Even though it was extremely slow, it was good to get it in.

PM - 5.14 miles in 40 mins with a strong finish. Average Pace - 7:46. I went out on my run just after I got back from the trek which was about 12ish. I might have been a little stupid to go in the middle of the day and heat but it seemed like the best time when I started. My legs felt a little tired from the trek but the soreness I felt early in the week was gone. It was super hot which made the strong finish  hard and the strong finish was also uphill but I enjoyed the run. Foot didn't hurt at all which makes me really happy because I was worried the trek would destroy my foot. Great first week.

AM - 6 miles. .5 barefoot warm and then 5.5 miles in 40 min. with 10 min. tempo. Average Pace: 7:24. Good easy tempo. Nothing crazy. We went 1.62 miles in the tempo for an average pace of about 6:08. I put myself out in front as best as I could. I'm really trying to be a leader in workouts now. Foot hurt for the first time this summer which was a bummer so I iced it up after practice.

PM - 4 miles. 31 min. easy. 3.78 miles. Average Pace: 8:16. First double of the season with Coach and some of the guys. Super hot so we went and jumped in Sandbergs to cool off. Run was nice and slow and went a little long but it was all good. Foot actually felt better than this morning.

We ran about 10 min. on the road before running on the grass so we wouldn't have to do a ton of loops. I really enjoyed the run today. The grass was nice and soft and wet which made it squishy. Foot felt great and new shoes felt good.

AM - 6.25 miles. 45 mins with 2x6:00 and 1x5:00 cruise. I didn't really do as good as I would have liked but not a bad workout early in the season. I stuck right at front on the first two repeats but started to fall off a bit on the last one. Logan and Nick lead on the last one with Paul and me not far behind. I need to work on sticking right with the group. I ended up cutting the last repeat to 5 min because I was falling off.

PM - 3.5 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 8:47. Another great afternoon to Sandbergs. It was hot but we jumped in Sandbergs 3 times so we never really got that hot.

I started falling off towards the end as we neared our strong finish. It wasn't that I couldn't stay up I was just being a baby about going so fast. I eventually got past my negative attitude and caught back up and I ended up leading the last minute or so. I just need to quit worrying about how fast we are going and just stick with the group.

The last two repeats got really hard but I promised myself I would stay with the group and that kept me going. AM - 5 miles. 40 min with 6 min test. Average Pace: 8:28. 6 min test was good but not as strong as I would have liked it. I got out fairly quick but Nick and Logan were out much faster and I just let them go. I ran next to Paul and Andrew for a bit until Paul pushed up to Logan and Nick. I really wished I had gone with Paul then but whatever. The rest of the time it was mostly just me and Andrew until the end where Preston and Dallin passed us. I didn't really like that so I gave one last good push with about 30 seconds left to pass them again. I finished 4th on the team which was good but I really wished I had been up by Nick and them. I covered 2 laps and 265 meters.

PM - 3 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 9:42. Ran at about 5 with Jake, Jason, Paul, and Nick out into the desert by Jake's house. It was kind of slow but still hard with the heat.

AM - 7.5 miles. 50 min with 5x4:30 min cruise intervals. Met up at the Region Course today so we could get our first look at it this season. Desert Hills had the same idea and we saw them there. The workout wasn't as great as I would of liked it but I'm going to take all positives from it. I forgot how tough the region course was and I think I let it get me down a bit. I was right at the front on the first two and I felt really strong but the last three were just garbage. I started falling behind and instead of giving a good push to try to regroup, I just gave up on myself. It was a really disappointing workout especially after how I did last week in the cruise intervals. I think I struggle the most when I think too much. I just need to run and relax. I will definitely work on that in the coming workouts.

I just felt really good today and I stayed really relaxed the whole time and it allowed me to be right at the front leading for many of them. We tried to keep the group together and we did a decent job. We tried to make those who were struggling lead us on a few of them and that really helped. They would eventually fall back and then me and Paul would usually take the lead from them but often they would still push right with  us. On the last one, Paul made and epic move about halfway through and I did my best to match. It was a really fun workout and really big team building one. I got out fairly quick and right into the front pack which included Nephi Eshler and his teammate Jessie, a runner from Bingham, some college age guy, and Preston. Preston and Jesse fell off early but I stayed relaxed and kept right with them for the first mile. Just after mile 1 I started to fall behind a little bit and it pretty much stayed that way the rest of the race. I made a few pushes in the last two miles and it kind of looked like I was gaining on Nephi but then I slowed back down and it went back to what it was before. I ended up finishing 4th. The Bingham kid won (not sure of his time), college guy was 2nd, Nephi finished 3rd, Jesse was 5th, and Preston was 6th. For halfway through the summer, I'm proud of how I did. Most of all the race was a lot fun. The course was pretty fast, mostly road, and the only hills were really small and gradual.

It was a really hard core trail and I do not recommend it. It is probably one of the hardest trails around here. It is super sandy on most of the trail and it is pretty hilly. It is really beautiful so I can't complain too much. We ended up losing the trail about halfway through and so we just ran randomly through the desert until we hit the trail again. I actually think the trail was much harder than where we ran. We went pretty slow today but I was feeling tired and worn down so I didn't mind. The strong finish was good. It was mostly downhill so it wasn't hard to get moving.

Mostly just our team since Desert Hills decided not to actually race it. I got out quick and right out in front with Coach and stuck right with him for most of the first lap. As we came down the home stretch towards the church, I started to fall back and Coach left me in the dust. I really wished I had just stuck with him a little longer because I really slowed down once I dropped off him. I hit the first lap in just over 8 min which was on pace for sub 17. I pretty much stayed in 2nd for the rest of the race until Jason passed me just before we turned to come down the home stretch. I still felt a bit fatigued on the warm up and the beginning of the workout but soon it just faded and I was able to get rolling. The first couple weren't too hard and I was able to stick right up front but on the last too I really started to struggle. I told myself to not worry about the last one which helped me to keep the third one very strong still and stay with the pack. The last one was extremely hard but I knew I couldn't just quit now when I was almost done. Nick made a big move on the last one and we all started to spread out and I almost faded back at this point but everyone else started matching Nick's move so I did too. I felt so terrible after we finished but it was worth it. That was one of my best workouts ever and one of the team's best workout ever. We had our strongest group of the year today even with some key guys missing. We finished with 6 guys all together.

PM - 3.5 miles. 30 min easy. Met up with the team today at the high school. We ran up into Green Springs. My legs felt tired but not too hot this afternoon. We saw Igor almost wreck his moped today as we were running. Probably the funniest thing all day.

AM - 9.5 miles. 60 min with 30 min tempo. Strong workout for me today. I really focused on keeping my breathing calm and staying relaxed. At the beginning, I just sat back and just let everybody else lead. I started to move up as some of the younger guys fell back but still sat at the back of the pack. With about 10 min left I started moving more towards the front and took the lead. I started to gap the group a little bit but I pulled back a little to let us regroup. Then me and Jason got a nice little groove going and we pulled a little bit ahead to finish off the tempo. It was definitely my best tempo of the season and I accomplished my only goal for the week which was to do well on the tempo. We also had a pretty good group going for most of it.

PM - 3.5 miles. Hot run on 2450 loop. I felt pretty good. Not tired like last week.

PM - 3.5 miles. 30 min easy. We ran out in Tonaquint today where Nick had to pick up Alex and Macen from Nerd Camp. Hot easy run through the desert out there.

AM - 5 miles. Enterprise 5k. 3rd Overall. Time: 18:10. Pretty uneventful race. The start was really weird and Nick was gone before I could react. For that first mile, I was right with Preston and this Enterprise runner but then Preston pulled ahead a bit and the Enterprise kid dropped hard. The rest of the race stayed pretty much stayed the same. Nick kept pulling farther and farther ahead. Preston pulled a little bit more ahead and I just was trying to hold on so the Enterprise kid didn't catch me. It was great to get a medal but it doesn't feel like a race worthy of a medal. I just felt like I didn't push myself that much. I really should have gone with Nick and Preston. It really bothers me that we have had such strong groups in practice but then our races are a lot more spread out. I guess these aren't important races and we didn't have all our guys there but still.

It was a super hard run and I felt really tired again and I fell behind all the guys. My strong finish wasn't very fast like last week which makes me kind of mad. I just haven't gotten enough sleep lately but I think I might still be getting used to all this mileage as well. I really don't want to keep feeling this way.

Nice strong group today. It still needs work but it's coming along. I didn't feel tired today which was great but I'm going to need to work to keep it that way.

It was pretty difficult those last few but I promised myself that I would get all the way to 15 and that really helped. Legs didn't feel tired even though I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night. Little bit of extra mileage at Kids Club.

PM - 3.25 miles. 30 min easy. I just ran by myself over to the school and ran the time trial course so I could start getting a feel for it. Crazy course with the addition of the rocks on the hill and better grass on top of the hill. AM - 12.75 miles. 90 min with strong finish. Fun run. Coach had dropped a car off somewhere so we didn't have to do an out and back which made it very nice and mostly downhill. I felt really sore and tired from yesterday but since it was mostly downhill I was able to stick with the group for the majority of it. I fell behind a bit at about 70 min when we passed the car because my stomach started feeling bad. Strong finish wasn't as fast as it should have been. I just couldn't push past the icky stomach. Super cool run despite the stomach and all the mud from the rain last night.

PM- 3.5 miles. 36 min easy. Treasure Run. We ran the classic trail where our team rescued a horse about 4 years ago. We went a little longer so that we could get all the way to the rescue point. I felt super sore and tired which made the run back up very hard but it was worth it. It was super fun.

I got out quick right with Nick and Logan but I slowed down quite a bit at the hill on the first lap and I got passed by quite a few guys. On the second lap I started moving up a bit again and caught Dallin who had passed me on the first lap and we got rolling coming into the last lap. On the last lap Dallin had gapped me and Jason passed me so I was sitting in about 7th but I had a nice kick and was able to just barely beat Dallin. Times weren't very fast today but conditions weren't great. Muddy and wet. We ran pretty tight as a team though and we had a 19 second spread from 1 to 5 and 22 seconds from 1 to 7. Still need to work on closing the gap from the 7 to 8 guy.

After mile one I just quit on myself and I got passed by a bunch of people. Our team also ran poorly. We didn't group up like we had worked so hard on during the summer and it really made a difference. Desert Hills ran amazing and ripped us apart. They ran the greatest team race I've ever seen and made us look like a JV squad. It was a really discouraging race especially after all the hard work I've put in. I was on our 3rd team with Andrew and Logan. I got to anchor and thus I had the shortest lap. When I got the baton, I was in 5th place and the race was really spread out so there wasn't anybody near me. I wanted to catch up to Boston but I couldn't get speed rolling like I wanted too. Our pack got out right behind Desert Hills pack and we stuck in there until about 1.5 miles where DH made a move and we couldn't match. Nick stayed with DH but the rest of us fell off. I tried my best to stay in there but I just wasn't ready. I was the 2nd guy on the team for most of the rest of the race until Jason, Dallin, and Preston passed me on the last lap. Not a good race for our team again. Nick won but other than that DH demolished us. They have a really good team this year. Coming into the 2nd lap I decided to try to make a huge move and see if I could go out and beat Nick. I gave a good push but only could hold off Nick for about 400 meters before he caught back up. The move wore me out and so I couldn't get myself to go with Nick and he pulled ahead. Paul passed me on this lap too. Coming into the 3rd lap I was really tired but somehow I was able to still give a good push and keep the gap between me and Paul small and finish 3rd on the team. Great race for the team as well. We have a really strong group from guys 2 to 7. Our problem is the gap between that group and Nick. If we can pull our group up with Nick, we would be a much stronger team.

PM - 6.5 miles. 50 min with 20 tempo. We ran our tempo over on the tempo loop we used during track. It was pretty hot and my knee still wasn't feeling good so the tempo was pretty hard. I tried my best to stick in the group today but it wasn't easy. I sat at the back for most of the first lap until our group started breaking up and I had to move up to Paul. I tried my best to stick on Paul and Andrew but I didn't have it today and they pulled ahead a bit. I finished off pretty weak so that's something to work on.

We decided to run this race to determine who was running Varsity at Vegas so everybody but Nick was racing. So my only goal going in was to get a Varsity spot. I got out pretty slow and worked myself up to Jake on the first lap. On the second lap I just stuck right with Jake as we caught up to Andrew and Dallin. I was pretty suprised at this point to see that we weren't that far behind the leaders. On the third lap Jake started making his signature move but unlike Region last year, I went with him and we gapped Dallin and Andrew a bit. I made a move just up the steep hill and took the lead from Jake for the first time but he battled back coming into the finish. As we came around the basketball court, Jake kicked hard but I just couldn't get myself to kick. Mostly it was because I was already in a great position to get a Varstiy spot. Jake ended up beating me by 2 seconds. Definitely my best full race of the season. 3rd on team (basically 4th if Nick was racing) so I will be running Varstiy at Vegas which should be fun. I felt like I could have done a lot better if I wasn't just racing for a Varstiy spot. I probably could have gone with Paul and maybe even challenged Nephi and Lambert.

AM - 8 miles. 60 min. Las Vegas Invite. Pretty good race for me today. The plan coming in was to stick with Nick as long as I could. I didn't get out very well and I lost Nick right away and I had to weave around a ton of guys trying to catch back up to him. I caught him around mile 1 and we worked really well together for a little bit until I realized he wasn't quite with it today and I decided to go catch Paul. I can't really remember when I caught Paul but I didn't stick with him for long because Centennial had 3 guys in front of all of us and I had to catch some of them. I don't really remember much about the rest of the race. I mostly just shut my brain off and ran but 2 of the Centennial guys died off pretty hard in the last mile and I was able to pass them. As we came to the finish there was a kid just barely in front of me that I couldn't get myself to go and catch so there is something I need to work on: my kick. I ended up finishing 1st on the team and beating Nick for the first time ever which was super weird even if it was only by 0.2 seconds and it was an off day for him. I'm still really confused about what place I took because I got a 5th Place Medal but the results say I took 6th and I'm almost positive that there was only 1 Centennial guy in front of me instead of 2 like the results say. Great race for our whole team today too. I helped us win the Large School Varsity Guys race, our Frosh/Soph boys won their race, our JV guys were 1 point away from a perfect score, and our Varsity Girls took second. Las Vegas also does a Grand Champion award for all the races and our guys won it so that was legit and we had tons of people walk away with super legit medals. Super fun race today.

I planned on going with Nick but I was already tired after the first 800 meters because we were going up hill and I slowed down a lot. I picked it up once we got going downhill and I was able to pass a few people which was not easy because the course is so small. I got up the Motha Cussa strong but it totally wore me out and I slowed down. Luckily everyone else slowed down too so I didn't get passed by very many people but I wished I had kept a good pace because I could have passed a ton of people. Race - 5.5 miles. Our race was super legit because it wasn't until 9:40 Cali time and so the sun had already set and it wasn't blazing hot. This race was very fast and I just wasn't ready for it today. I didn't get out as fast as I should have and I fell behind my teammates early. I tried to catch Andrew in the 2nd mile but every time I surged, I didn't hardly make a dent in the gap. In the 3rd mile I gave another surge but I still wasn't moving up on Andrew and I wasn't really passing anyone either. I finished with one of my best kicks of the season but it still wasn't that great. I barely missed breaking 16 (seriously my time was 16:00.0) which was kind of bummer but I was more bummed about my placing on the team. I was 6th on the team and I felt like I ran pretty well. It wasn't a bad race for me. It was just a better race for my teammates. I guess that's a good sign though and shows that our team is getting stronger. I need to work on my start because I kept the gap between me and Andrew pretty much the same for the whole race. If I had gone with Andrew from the start that gap never would have existed. Just something to work on. Our team won our race so I shouldn't be so bummed.

AM - 3.75 miles. 30 min easy. Hamstrings still felt tired and sore from the weekend.

PM - 7.5 miles. 50 min with 2 set Michigan and striders. Well the Michigan is basically a tempo workout with varying tempo paces. A 2 set Michigan starts with 800 meters on the track at 5k race pace, then 1.5 miles on the grass at 10k race pace, then 800 meters on the track at 5k race pace, 1.5 miles on the grass at 10k race pace, and an all-out 400 to finish. Total distance of the 2 set Michigan is 4.25 miles. We have two different standards (A and B) that we try to hit and are awarded if we do so. I came in looking to hit A standard for the first time which is a time of 25:10. I did not do as well as I should have today. In fact, most of our team ran pretty bad today. I took it out fairly slow with Jake and we slowly started working our way up to where we were supposed to be. As we hit the 2nd 800 meter on the track, Jake really started moving and I couldn't get myself to go with him. I caught Nick this time on the track and I could tell he was really struggling and so I passed him. The rest of the time, I was working on catching Jason but couldn't quite do it and finished quite crappy and Nick came back and passed me. I sadly missed out on A standard running like a 25:40 or something like that. That's pretty much the same time I hit last year so that's a little bit frustrating. I have definitely decided that I don't run so well when I take it out slower because I'm not very good at speeding up to make up for the slow start. I have made it a goal to get out fast from now on, not necessarily a front runner but definitely up closer to the front. I felt hardcore tired afterwards so I definitely need to work on getting more sleep.

I didn't get out with my team like I planned and I never was able to get back with them. I honestly didn't even race today. I pushed a bit but mostly it was just a relaxed tempo. Definitely my poorest race of the season and ended up being one of the most disappointing for our team. We finished a very heartbreaking 4th place. We shouldn't have let Park City or Stansbury beat us but we just ran so bad. I blame myself for the poor race. It seems that our worst races this season have come when I have run bad and our best races have come when I have ran decent. I wanted to walk out of there with no regrets and sadly I walked out of there with more regrets then any other race I've ever ran before.

I'm right where I want to be physically but just haven't been there mentally. I haven't been running with my heart or with my guts and that is my biggest problem right now.

PM - 8.25 miles. 6-7x1000 with 3 min recovery. Super hardcore run today. Coach told us we were doing 1000 repeats but didn't tell us how many so we just started busting them out. I felt decent on the first 2 or 3 but those wore me out a lot and the rest of them were pretty difficult. I always hung back at the beginning and then at the top of the hill, I would make a good strong push and get back where I needed to be. On the last one, Coach ran with us and told us if he passed us that we stopped our repeat right there. I ran mine the same way I had the whole time and Coach passed me crossing the cement by the Baseball Field. I really wished I pushed a bit harder and hadn't let him pass me because I know if I had made it up the hill, he probably wouldn't have been able to catch me. That's okay though, it was still a great workout.

I was working pretty good with Nick, Jake, Paul, and Dallin for most of the first half. I started feeling really tired after the first set and I fell behind that group a ton. I was really struggling with about 1 grass loop left on the 2nd set and Coach and his crew came and passed me here. I almost gave up on myself at this point but I got my mind back in it and gave a strong push to keep the gap small between me and Coach's crew. I kicked it in well and finished with about a 25:03 and hit A standard for the first time ever which is good since this is probably the last time I will ever do this workout.

I think my biggest problem this year is I get so worried about everything. I get worried about who I should beat, how I should race, how fast I should go, and on and on and on. So today I just didn't really worry about anything and just went out and had fun. I got out pretty quick today and into 2nd place which was weird because it didn't feel that fast. I guess it was probably because the beginning was down hill. Once we came back up hill is where I really started to struggle a bit and people started passing me. It was really only Spencer Ford and Paul who went around me at the beginning. As we came past the baseball fields is where everyone started to move around me and I just kind of relaxed at this point. I can't really remember much of the rest of the race but Coach yelling at us that we were so close to their five. I could see Sage wasn't too far ahead just up the hill on the last lap but I was pretty tired and I settled a little too much at this point. I finally got up some courage to kick coming around the turn to the finish but it was too late and I finished less than a second behind Paul and 2 seconds behind Sage. That was one of our best races against DH this year. The score didn't really show it but that was the closest our 5th guy has been to their 5th so that was pretty cool. I ended up 4th on the team and that was good enough to secure my spot for Nike. Super excited for next week. Coach isn't signing us up for the Championship race which is kind of a bummer but we will probably run better in the Open race anyways so I understand.

I stuck right on Nick's back for the first two laps but I started feeling really tired at the beginning of the third lap and Andrew passed me right here. The third lap was really tough for me and Andrew started to gap me a little bit on this lap. When we hit the last lap, I found some energy again and caught Andrew on the back stretch and kicked pretty hard the last two hundred but sadly I missed out on breaking 4:40. Nonetheless, just a great race for me. PR by 9 seconds and the best race I've ever had on the track. I've finally figured out how I race best and its to get out fast.  I need to work on that third lap because that's where I lost a lot of ground. If I had stuck on Nick on that third lap, I could have hit sub 4:40 and probably could have pushed Nick to sub 4:30.

Foot Locker West - Not my best race today. I thought I was ready to roll but I psyched myself out a lot this morning and everything just went down hill from there. I didn't get out very quick and so I found myself trapped like crazy in the pack for most of the first mile. I came through the first mile in like 5:07 but once we hit the switchbacks my whole race just crashed and burned. I was exhausted after switch backs so my last 2 miles were mostly just a tempo instead of a race. I didn't kick or anything. Just not a good race. Sad way to end my high school career but I think it just gives me more motivation to run better during track.

At every big race you'll be in the pack at the beginning. Being in the pack isn't the problem, not relaxing within the pack is the problem. 5:07 1st mile is probably too fast even for being within the pack, you could run 20 seconds slower in the 1st mile and finish overall 1 minute faster. Having the patience to actually race for 3 miles rather than just one or two is what the 5K is all about. The pack will race for the 1st mile, but then half the pack races for the 2nd mile, and then only the few race the 3rd mile. Everyone's feeling like they're racing, but only a few are, the rest have burned themselves up.

AM - 4 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 7:37. Met up with my boys Preston and Jake at Sullivan Soccer Park and the girls showed up at the same time for some reason. My ankle hurt a lot for some reason for the first mile but I was fine after that. It was a super fun run and Preston was hilarious the whole time.

Studies show Preston is funny in a weird sort of way.

No joke. I could barely breathe today on the run because Preston was so funny.

AM - 3.5 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 8:17. Ran out into Washington at about 6 this morning. Ankle still hurt and I can't think of how I hurt it. Probably rolled it or something but don't really remember if I did or not. I decided to take it a lot easier today and give it a chance to heal up good. Good run but I just hate the cold.

AM - 4 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 7:37. Great Christmas Run. I tried out my new Virrata 2s and they are beast. They are almost exactly the same as the 1s but that's okay since the 1s were already almost perfect. It's like they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." A little chilly this morning but I felt like it wasn't as bad as it has been. My ankle felt a lot better today. Still some pain but very little now. Found one of those metal rings that I tripped on a couple years back and I picked it up as a souvenir.

AM - 4 miles. 30 min easy. Average Pace: 7:46. Met up with a bunch of people at Josie's house and we ran out over the bridge. It was super cold and my foot was a little bothered by the uneven dirt on the side of the road but it was a good run.

AM - 4.25 miles. 40 min easy. Average Pace: 9:11. Trail Run!!! Met up with a bunch of people at Chuckwalla and had a beast run. I felt really good this morning. A few aches and pains that eventually faded out but that's how I usually feel on Monday. It was such a fun and beautiful run but it's still so freakin cold in the morning and it sucks. Other than that, great way to start the week.

AM - 5.25 miles. 40 min easy. Average Pace: 7:53. Ran by myself across Foremaster hill this morning at about 6:30. Super cold again but it's always nice to run earlier in the morning because the streets are a lot less busy and combine that with the top of Foremaster which is never busy, it was a nice quiet run. Felt good, nothing hurt besides my face.
