Foot Locker West - Not my best race today. I thought I was ready to roll but I psyched myself out a lot this morning and everything just went down hill from there. I didn't get out very quick and so I found myself trapped like crazy in the pack for most of the first mile. I came through the first mile in like 5:07 but once we hit the switchbacks my whole race just crashed and burned. I was exhausted after switch backs so my last 2 miles were mostly just a tempo instead of a race. I didn't kick or anything. Just not a good race. Sad way to end my high school career but I think it just gives me more motivation to run better during track.

At every big race you'll be in the pack at the beginning. Being in the pack isn't the problem, not relaxing within the pack is the problem. 5:07 1st mile is probably too fast even for being within the pack, you could run 20 seconds slower in the 1st mile and finish overall 1 minute faster. Having the patience to actually race for 3 miles rather than just one or two is what the 5K is all about. The pack will race for the 1st mile, but then half the pack races for the 2nd mile, and then only the few race the 3rd mile. Everyone's feeling like they're racing, but only a few are, the rest have burned themselves up.
